Ngāti Kuia artist Hamuera Manihera  in his work aims to revive the tradition of weaving that has been passed on to him by his grandmother. His journey of making a kaitaka huaki paepaeroa was inspired by the taonga collected from Kurahaupo people by the First Russian Antarctic Expedition in Totaranui/ Queen Charlotte Sounds in 1820. The name of this kākahu is “Whiria Te Muka Tangata” Plaiting the fibres of humanity”. The purpose of this name was to acknowledge all those that have contributed to helping weave this taonga.
